A secretagogue is a substance that promotes the secretion of another substance. Growth hormone-releasing peptide 6 (GHRP-6) is also known as growth hormone-releasing hexapeptide and is one of several synthetic met-enkephalin analogues that include unnatural D-amino acids. These were developed for their growth hormone-releasing activity and are called growth hormone secretagogues. While they may lack opioid activity, they are potent stimulators of growth hormone (GH) release. They are distinct from growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH). They share no sequence relation and derive their function through activation of an entirely different receptor.
